MML was founded by Jon and Upayadhī.
We have been running the website for the MBSR Teachers Collaborative of Greater New York since 2010. Since its founding, it became a “go to” website for all things MBSR in the region, including easy to navigate course listings for the general public and referring mental health practitioners.
As the site grew, it required more attention and a bigger investment to function well. So we launched Mindfulness Meditation Live, a sister site. We still support the MBSR Teachers Collaborative website, which has been upgraded and is now re-focused on its core mission.
Jon is a full-time mindfulness and Dharma teacher. Upayadhī is a seminary student who builds websites for fun in her free time, as a nerd in more ways than one! We are both Certified MBSR Teachers (and Jon is a Certified MBSR Teacher Trainer), who have been teaching courses for over 10 years. As such, we have a personal understanding of many of the needs of students and of the mindfulness teaching community.
Stuff we care about
This is a passion project and a labor of love. We aim to be of service of the general public, to the community of health-care professionals who seek trustworthy resources to recommend to patients, and of course to the professional mindfulness teaching community.
We are delighted (and stunned) to have witnessed the exponential growth of the field in the last decade. And like many in this work, we share a concern for integrity, embodiment and good practice standards. The field is in flux, fragmented and unregulated. Furthermore, there is no single centralized listing for MBSR teachers in particular.
We also know of the challenge of newer teachers to find mentors, institutional support and the ability to develop a sustainable livelihood from their teaching practice, following the significant investment of time and money that rigorous teacher training requires. Although much has been said about the growth of the field, most MBSR teachers we know are not able to make a living solely from teaching MBSR. This sites aims to help qualified and certified MBSR teachers to be more easily found by those seeking to learn from them.
Importantly, we are committed to doing what we can to further racial diversity within the MBSR teaching community in the US in particular. While running the prior MBSR Collaborative website over the last ten years, we were able to fund several grants for BIPOC applying for MBSR Teacher Training at the New York Insight Meditation Center. We will continue and strengthen this commitment through Mindfulness Meditation Live, by dedicating a portion of the revenue to a BIPOC scholarship fund for MBSR Teacher Training.
Advisors on MBI protocols and standards
Although well embedded in the MBSR training ecosystem in the US, we are certainly not experts in everything, nor should we be operating in a vacuum.
Many MBSR Teachers are also trained in other MBIs (Mindfulness-Based Interventions), and we are happy to have developed this site to better showcase their offerings.
The following people have agreed to advise on specific MBIs, their respective standards of practice, and the credentialing of training organizations.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) & Teacher Training - Florence Meleo-Meyer
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) & Teacher Training - TBD
Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) & Teacher Training - Beth Mulligan
Breathworks (Mindfulness for Pain) & Teacher Training - Ginny Wall
Interpersonal Mindfulness - Elaine Retholtz
Mindfulness Programs for Elders - Lucia McBee
Mindfulness Programs for Teens & Kids - TBD
Accountability Advisors for DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)
These trusted senior mindfulness teachers with experience in DEI have kindly accepted to support us in our vision for greater equity and inclusion in the field. In particular, we will be seeking their counsel in how to best manage the BIPOC Scholarship Fund for MBSR Teachers in Training.
