Instructors: Kathleen Beck-Coon
In this first step in the MBSR Teacher Training pathway teacher trainees engage fully in the 8-week MBSR program as participants and as observers. In addition, they engage with other trainees and the instructor in a 3.5 hour seminar exploring the underpinnings, approach, and teacher qualities in which the program is steeped. Full attendance at all sessions is required.
The 10-week Foundations in MBSR seminar will be run concurrently with the June-July MBSR class.
Foundations participants “live inside” the MBSR experience learning the underpinnings of MBSR as someone in the teacher’s seat. Through investigation, practice, and shared experience, this first formal course in the learning path to teach MBSR establishes the guiding principles and practices of the MBSR program and curriculum. Teacher competencies of language, principles, pedagogical methods, attitudes and skills of the teacher, and relational dynamics including work in diversity and trauma-informed mindfulness are observed, investigated, and practiced through the lens of MBSR. Of course, all the learning is held in the whole-person frame of one’s deepening meditation practice. The course is also appropriate for anyone desiring skills in sharing mindfulness with individuals or groups but who does not plan to continue in the MBSR teacher pathway. It may be of benefit to therapists, teachers, community, organization, or business leaders who wish to bring mindfulness practice to those they serve.
